I grew up playing with my Barbie’s hair, dressing them up, imagining them at the store. My aunt had a huge influence on my love for fashion and beauty; a part of me knew I’d always wind up in this industry. Yet, I found myself away from Barbie hair, in corporate America, in a job that took way more from me than it gave. At a point of reckoning, my husband asked “What’s your dream?” I responded, “I want to do hair.” So, that’s exactly what I did. The journey of becoming a hairstylist proved difficult. It was a new world, and… Read More

My testimony is not an uncommon story. I was lost, struggling with self-worth, unknown purpose, emotional pain, and most importantly, a life without God. Something will always be the most important thing to us; if it’s not God, it becomes an idol. If you can’t relate with another’s testimony, I encourage you to fill in that spot with your own struggle. It could be drugs, alcohol, pride, work, food, or even good deeds. I suppose my story begins where all stories do, in childhood. My parents made many good choices and did a lot of things right. They also passed on… Read More

There is a popular song in contemporary Christian music called “Another in the Fire” by Hillsong UNITED. On August 20, 2025, there was another in the fire with me. His name is Jesus. I was in a propane explosion on this fateful day. Three coworkers and I were in a mobile coffee truck that our church owns and operates. We were preparing to serve well over a thousand individuals who were moving their students back in at Wake Forest University. As we finished our preparations, we began to hear an ear-piercing noise. All of a sudden, a flash went across the truck,… Read More

After I had some heart issues, I began walking to improve my health. Walking was a form of mediation, and an invitation to grow in both my physical and spiritual stamina. As I was hustling through the mall, it occurred to me that “people tend to advertise for other people by the shirts they wear.” The decision followed: If they could advertise their purpose, I could advertise mine too! My purpose is to serve Jesus Christ. From here, my newfound ministry began; “not only reflecting the name ‘Jesus,’ but who the ‘Jesus’ was.” Over 20 years of wearing my “Jesus T-Shirts,” some purchased,… Read More

Life happens. Relationships splinter, finances are squeezed, and pressures mount. For me, this meant consuming large amounts of alcohol. It was my valve for releasing pressure and granting momentary relief. Yet, as any addict will confess, there was never enough to fill the void. I realized I was not being true to myself, so I stumbled into AA and dedicated four years to going nearly every day. The meetings often discussed the “big book,” which outlined principles for defeating addiction. While it helped me stay sober, the emptiness remained. The “big book” reminded me of another book I’d read as a… Read More

Six feet tall and a force to be reckoned with, my mom raised five children, alone, on very little money. While pregnant with my brother, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. My grandmother pressured her to terminate the pregnancy, but my mom refused. After giving birth, she started driving 100 miles for regular chemotherapy sessions, taking my siblings and me along. On these trips, my mom followed the tradition of buying us fancy drinks at a gas station, hoping to distract us from our difficulties. One time, the car overheated, and she prayed aloud: “I just need to make it to the hospital!”… Read More
